lovely little things
I'll be the first person to admit i am uptight. that free-spirited, care-free way of life? I know nothing of the sort. I would love to be able to say i'm a spontaneous person that can drop whatever i'm doing in the moment and dive right in to an exciting opportunity. If a friend calls me at the last minute to make plans, it's really hard for me to muster up the courage and say YES.
Living in the present moment is something i am ALWAYS working on. Often times, it is the basis of my intention for yoga classes that I offer up to students. It is not only a great lesson for them but a constant reminder of the thing I need to work on most. Sort of a "Practice what you preach" approach. Some days it works and some days it takes a little more to push me in the right direction.
One practice I have been trying to keep up with is writing down the little things that make up a great day. Those lovely little things that make your day better, either big or small. That which keeps you focused on the present moments. For me, it could be anywhere from experiencing a new place in the city (black dog gelato pictured) to opening up an avocado to find it perfectly ripe. The key to this practice is simple. There are no limits as to how many lovely little things you can have in one day, and you must, MUST write them down. Find an old journal (I know I have about 20 of them at home half written in). Make a list on your notes app in your phone. Heck, find some colorful post-it notes and scatter them around the house. Just make sure to write them down.
Then, keep reminding yourself of those lovely little things by looking back at them from time to time. Maybe some of the things will bring a smile to your face on a considerably hard day. Or, maybe you'll find more gratitude for the things you actually have rather than focusing on what you don't. Either way, I can promise you this, focusing on the lovely little things in your life WILL make you a better person and keep you living your best and present life.
