tuesday intention: be teachable
Over the weekend, I experienced a very humbling and meaningful moment as a yoga teacher. I posted a little bit about this on my own Instagram account on Saturday because I was really taken aback by this awesome moment.
Every Saturday I teach a vinyasa style class during the late morning. It's a class I have ALWAYS enjoyed teaching for so many different reasons. First, this class usually involves 2-3 regular yogi students. And, for a beginner like me, it's a comfort in and of itself to see familiar faces each and every week. Secondly, I love the time of day. It forces me to wake myself up on a Saturday morning and usually sets a positive tone for the day.
On this particular day, I had been feeling tired, run down, and overall not in the best of spirits. Battling the cold and flu season on top of weird weather changing patterns and allergies. I just felt blah. I arrived, though, and taught the class as usual. With both my mind and physical state comprised, I thought overall, I did a mere okay. I felt I could have given a tad bit more. More effort, more of myself, more meaning.
While my students were packing up to leave the studio that morning, they had nothing but the kindest words for me. "That was an AMAZING class!" "Thank you so much, I really loved that class." "You're an awesome teacher!" Hearing those affirmations immediately took me out of my funk and brought me to a new place. My whole attitude changed for the rest of the day. As I reflected upon this later, I sensed that I arrived to my mat Saturday morning NOT as the teacher but as the student.
These gracious people had provided me with a gift that I didn't even know I needed. A true and authentic learning experience that I will be forever grateful for. As Dr. Seuss says, "The more that you read, the more things you will know, the more that you learn, the more places you'll go!" Challenge yourself to be teachable - who knows where you may end up.
